New York Street Life

June 2, 2025

Livin’ in the Hood – New York Street Life 1990 & 2013/14 chronicles the personal New York adventures of photographers Jörg Rubbert and Jürgen Bürgin: on view at the American Center in Prague from June 3 to September 25, 2025.
The exhibition takes viewers on a visual journey to New York City, seen through the eyes of two photographers at different points in time. In 1990, Jörg Rubbert captured NYC in atmospherically condensed, analogue black-and-white images – whereas Jürgen Bürgin created colourful, narrative photographs of the city in 2013/14.

Both artists show the Big Apple from unusual, subjective points of view. What they have in common is their thematic focus: everyday life in New York’s boroughs and communities, spontaneous street scenes, impressions of parades and other large and small events. The result is a fascinating insight into what New York felt like at the time, and how the city has changed in between each photographer’s exploration.
