The former fixed focal length lens (Elmarit 2.8/24mm Asph) was replaced by the Vario-Elmar lens (3.5-6.4/18-46 mm Asph – equivalent to 28-70 mm in small image format). The video function was also new. With the X-Vario it was now possible to make full HD resolution videos (1920x1080 pixel) and save them in MP4 format.
The design of the X-Vario is very much inspired by the Leica M (Typ 240) – including the question of materials. Consequently, the body is made out of magnesium and aluminium, and the top plate out of solid aluminium. The last of the visible changes is the 3” TFT-LCD display with 920,000 pixels.
