Photographer Antanas Sutkus (born 1939 in Lithuania) is fascinated by people. His images suggest a reserved chronicler, taking his time to anticipate the right moment, patiently waiting until his subject looks at the camera openly and without contrived pose.
In Soviet times, it was forbidden to display photographs of sick or lonely people, so that much of Sutkus' work had to remain unpublished. While he no longer photographs today, the artist is now publishing a gradual flow of images from his archives. The Albrecht Gallery presents a selection of 33 black-and-white images printed from negatives taken in the sixties and seventies.
