People in all their facets were at the centre of Gottfried’s visual approach. In some cases, the photographer accompanied her subjects over the course of years or even decades. Her book ‘Midnight’, for example, tells the story of Ismael Burgos in images captured over a period of 20 years. In 1970 the artist, who had always lived side by side with New York’s Puerto Rican community, embarked on a project about the inhabitants of the city’s El Burro neighbourhood - eventually culminating in the photo book ‘Bacalaitos & Fireworks’, released in 2011.
