(E)motion in One Frame

Share:

“When photography was around 75 years old, images finally wanted to move: for a good 100 years, this illusion has been maintained by 24 individual still images rushing through a projector in one second. Each of these frames can once again become a photograph. Sometimes, with a little luck, it can be ‘moving’ in its own right.” (Wim Wenders)

The exhibition ‘FilmBilder’, presented at Johanna Breede Photokunst from February 15th to 25th, 2023, comprises still frames taken from various Wim Wenders films: in essence, moments stopped in mid-motion. The showcased prints perfectly illustrate that the mood and story of a film – and the emotion elicited by its sequential forward movement – are already contained in each individual frame.

One of the great pioneers of New German Cinema in the 1970s, Wim Wenders now ranks among the most important representatives of international contemporary cinema. In addition to multiple-award-winning movies such as ‘Paris, Texas’ or ‘The Sky Above Berlin’, Wenders’ oeuvre as director, producer, photographer and author also encompasses numerous innovative documentaries (including ‘Pina’, Buena Vista Social Club’ and ‘The Salt of the Earth’), as well as worldwide photo exhibitions, numerous photo books, film books and essay collections.
