Woven from Light

January 13, 2026

Johanna Breede Photokunst in Berlin presents works by Japanese fashion photographer Yuriko Takagi. The showcase is on view until January 31, 2026.
Fragile but powerful – sensuous without being voyeuristic – quiet, but full of passion: the photographs on view at Johanna Breede’s gallery are infused with a softness that seems unusual in the highly stylised, at times even rigid world of fashion photography. The exhibition encompasses three series of works created by renowned Japanese photographer Yuriko Takagi in the period from 1992 to 1995, featuring the collections of avant-garde fashion designers Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons).

Takagi is drawn to the nuanced interplay between body and dress, dress and space, space and body. With the artful sensitivity of a choreographer, she manages to translate movement into a static image without losing even a trace of its graceful dynamism. Using long exposures, the artist plays with the creation at hand – be it  a flowing dress or the wave-like lines of a pleated fabric. In her timeless images, a dress is not merely worn – it becomes a dance partner.

Yuriko Takagi, born in Tokyo in 1951, ranks among the leading Japanese photographers of her generation. Her work is represented in major collections, and has been exhibited worldwide. In and Out of Mode is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Germany. The majority of the analogue black-and-white works – perfectly presented in the gallery’s minimalist exhibition spaces – are vintage prints, with a small number of one-of-a-kind, hand-coloured pieces.
