Due to the new COVID19-regulations by the Belgian government Ibasho gallery will have to close as of Monday 2 November. You can still visit the exhibition 'Mukayu' and meet Paul Cupido on November 1st, 2020 from 2pm - 6pm.

Under the title of ‘Mukayu’, Paul Cupido (b. 1977) presents photographic explorations created in Japan. The Dutch artist’s visual language is distinguished by a magical quality and mesmerising poetic power.

The concept of ‘mukayu’ arose from a quote by the famous Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, dating back some 2300 years: “An empty room will be filled with light because of its emptiness.” Mukayu refers to non-existence, non-purpose or the natural state of things. The term ‘mu’ can be interpreted as an emptiness that is full of potential.

In 2017, Cupido graduated from the Photo Academy Amsterdam with his series ‘Searching for Mu’, accompanied by an eponymous catalogue. His second book, ‘Continuum’ (2019) represented the next step on his inner journey. This has now been followed by ‘Mukayu’ – his third publication and yet another testament to his spiritual and artistic evolution.
