Toscana documents a part of the world that conjures up familiar associations and personal memories in many viewers. One of Europe’s oldest and most significant cultural landscapes, the North-Italian region also holds a politically-charged meaning particularly within Germany, where it still brings to mind the so-called ‘Tuscany Fraction’ – a group of politicians and intellectuals who favoured Tuscany for holidays and sabbaticals.
The Leica photographer was fascinated by the landscape’s history, spanning from the Antiquity to the architecture of the Medieval period, all the way to the modern day. Shooting in black and white, Presser created a portrait of Tuscany which further expands our collective image of the region.
