5th RAY Triennial of Photography: ECHOES

May 3, 2024

From 3 May to 1 September 2024, Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main Region will once again host the RAY Triennial of Photography. This year’s focal points: Identity, Memory, Emotion.
How do images contribute to our understanding of identity, memories and emotions? What role do they play in the social, societal and political discourse of the current day? The 2024 RAY Triennial for Photography investigates these questions, but does not seek to present answers: similar to a scientific experiment, international artists offer up their individual explorations, whereby the viewers’ own reflections – their echoes – form the core focus of the artistic interaction.

The triennial, which runs from 3 May to 1 September 2024, kicks off with a three-day festival (3 to 5 May) where artists, curators and specialists from interdisciplinary fields will discuss the concept of Echoes in a series of lectures and talks.

The exhibition programme is spread across multiple venues; however, the central themes of Identity, Memory and Emotion are explored in three main institutions: the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, and the Museum für Angewandte Kunst, where visitors encounter works by renowned artists such as Omar Victor Diop, Mimi Plumb, Nicholas Nixon and Maisie Cousins.

RAY was established as an initiative of the Frankfurt RheinMain Cultural Foundation, with the aim of fostering the high quality and diversity of photography and related media within the region.
