Emerging Photographer Award

The aim of the new, 3000-euro award is to support up-and-coming photography artists, and raise their profile on the international art market. It is organised by the Art, Market and Law section of the DGPh in collaboration with the WhiteWall photo lab. Leica Gallery Paris will host the award ceremony, held in November 2024 as part of the renowned Paris Photo art fair.
The DGPh’s Art, Market and Law section is dedicated to photography with a focus on the commercial and legal framework associated with publication and sales. Members of the section include gallery owners, curators, exhibition organisers, representatives of auction houses, and other art market experts such as publicists and art consultants. Nominations for the Emerging Photographer Award can be submitted online via the DGPh website.
Photographic art tends to be more affordably priced compared to other art forms on the market. This attracts considerable numbers of (especially) young collectors – which, in turn, presents a chance for emerging photographers to break into the market at a faster rate. The nominees should therefore be artists who – regardless of their age – have been present on the international art market for less than three years.
A high-calibre selection committee, composed of renowned DGPh and art market representatives, will decide on the winner. The jury includes Simone Klein (photography specialist and consultant), Celina Lunsford (Artistic Director at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt), Ute Noll (gallerist and curator), Sophie-Charlotte Opitz (curator and Krupp fellowship laureate), DGPh Co-Chair, gallerist, curator and lecturer Michael Biedowicz, and Sebastian Lux, curator for the F.C. Gundlach Foundation.
The winner will be honoured on 8 November at the Leica Gallery Paris – located in close vicinity to the Grand Palais, which (following the completion of its renovation) will serve as the venue for the 27th Paris Photo. As the world’s leading photography fair, Paris Photo provides the perfect setting for this inaugural award ceremony.
Going forward, the Emerging Photographer Award will be given out on a two-yearly basis.
