The new Leica M6

October 20, 2022

A legend of analogue rangefinder photography returns.
With the re-edition of the Leica M6, Leica responds to a widely expressed wish for the expansion of the company’s analogue camera segment. The M6 holds a special place among Leica’s rangefinder cameras: originally manufactured from 1984 to 2002 – with almost 175,000 cameras produced in total – the M6 gave rise to countless iconic photographs that have shaped our collective view of the world.

The M6 features a manual exposure mode based on a light meter – making it the perfect tool for ambitious photographers wishing to concentrate on the essential. With the re-issue of this legendary camera, Leica is also responding to a growing trend – particularly among younger demographics – to rediscover and appreciate the deliberative nature of analogue photography.

The Leica M6 of 2022 features the modern version of the rangefinder viewfinder with a magnification of 0.72, all of whose optical surfaces are coated and less sensitive to stray light. In addition to the two arrow symbols shown in the 1984 variant, the current M6’s light meter displays a central dot for the correct exposure. The new camera also offers a low-battery indicator. While the top panel of the original M6 was made of die-cast zinc, the re-issued model’s top plate is milled from solid brass and – like that of the M11 – finished with a scratch-resistant black lacquer. The M6 provides heavily centre-weighted, through-the-lens light metering via a circular white patch on the mechanical cloth shutter.

The re-edition of the M6 retains typical characteristics such as the slanted film rewind crank, without missing out on newer developments (such as the optimised rangefinder viewfinder) which further improve the camera’s usability. What the original and current M6 models have in common is a perfect reduction to the most useful and essential functions needed for photography: nothing is missing, and nothing is superfluous. The camera, which is produced in Germany through meticulous manual assembly, will serve as an exceedingly reliable companion for all those who appreciate the contemplative art of analogue photography.

The Leica M6 is available globally at Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store and authorized dealers starting November 3, 2022. The retail price will be €5,050.00 including VAT.
