The Nature of Things

December 14, 2023

Jessica Backhaus zeroes in on everyday objects and situations, creating a fascinating interplay between realistic representation and enigmatic abstraction.
In Jessica Backhaus’ quest for new means of expression, the artist seeks out unusual perspectives as she observes the world through her camera. Playing liberally with diverse materials, she moves freely between orchestrated still lifes, collages, and minimalist experiments with colour and light.

With ‘The Nature of Things’, Berlin’s Haus am Kleistpark presents a comprehensive selection of the Leica photographer's work: the exhibition, which is on view until 17 December 2023, includes unpublished images from her new series ‘The Nature of Things’ (2023), along with excerpts from the series ‘Cut Outs’ (2021), ‘A Trilogy’ (2017), and ‘Six Degrees of Freedom’ (2015).
