With the exhibition ‘Specimen – Photographs and Sculptures’, the Photography Collection of the SK Cultural Foundation ventures beyond the photographic medium to present an artist who has harmoniously combined photography with painting and sculpture since the 1980s.
Winkler’s work is characterised by a figurative approach, with a broad spectrum of topics ranging from portraits of people as well as animals, to (often unconventional) still lifes, landscapes and urban photography.
The artist’s still lifes and depictions of singular subjects seem like a catalogue of memories, while his landscapes bring together elements of nature, urbanity and artificiality. They could be viewed as symbols of the macrocosm from which Gerhard Winkler draws the material objects that serve as both his inspiration and emblematic mementos.
