In the course of his more than two-decade-long career, Herb Ritts (1952–2002) collaborated with the world’s most illustrious rock, pop and rock’n roll musicians of the 1980s and 90s – creating numerous iconic portraits of stars such as David Bowie, Tina Turner, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and many more.
With great sensitivity and a confident visual style, which relied on a strict formality to achieve a sculptural sensuousness, Ritts not only created timeless portraits, but also coined a profoundly influential aesthetic. Many of his portraits became album covers, and still count as milestones in music history to this day.
