Thomas Wrede: Bäume im Schnee, 2010
Thomas Wrede (1963) is already well established on the Düsseldorf photo scene, not least due to three former solo exhibitions at the Beck & Eggeling Gallery.
His photographic works are always inspired by a longing for nature. In his Real Landscapes series, Wrede makes use of train set props, placing miniature houses and trees within real nature – on the beach, in the snow or close to a puddle.
Consequently, the viewer's perception is directed on a false track, because in the photo the whole surroundings are aligned to the size of the houses or the trees. The illusion produced by the contradictions and incongruity of the proportions results from the clever use of an analogue plate camera with wide angle lens – Wrede influences the scale and shortens the distances. Consequently, the puddle turns into a lake, a pile of snow into a snow-covered mountain chain, and a few centimetres of sand into a kilometre-long beach.
