Photography with Distinction

Johanna Langenhoff has been chosen as the winner of the August Sander Award 2024.
Johanna Langenhoff (b. 2000) is a photography student at the HAW University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. Her winning series, titled Ich oder so (Me, or something along those lines), was created in 2023/2024 against the backdrop of existential questions relating to identity and gender affiliation.

“Many feelings that are difficult to put into words are easier to express visually,” the photographer explains. “At the same time, the images open up a space for conversation, where I can talk about myself – my process, my sense of not belonging, the moments of understanding, the uncertainty, the feeling of having to define myself, and the lack of finality within the definition of ‘non-binary’.”

Longing, past memories and current perceptions are central themes in the artist’s processual explorations, characterised by a search for individual positioning and expression. This is reflected in the captured scenes, which oscillate between (self) portraits and body shots, landscapes and spatial details, concrete and abstract studies of form. Light and shadow are frequently used as both compositional and atmospheric tools.

Ich oder so is reminiscent of a multi-faceted kaleidoscope, comprising different emotional states and experiences. The series also leaves room for the viewer’s own thoughts and associations – centred not only around the artist and her images, but also around the nature of human development in its fundamental form.

Established in 2018, the August Sander Award aims to promote young artists working in the field of documentary and conceptual photography. The biennial, 5000-euro prize is sponsored by Ulla Bartenbach and Prof. Dr. Kurt Bartenbach. More than 120 photographers entered their work for this year’s edition, both from within Germany and abroad.
