Pioneers of 35mm Photography

October 5, 2020

A road movie in photographs: from October 5, 2020 to January 16, 2021, Leica Gallery Nuremberg presents a showcase of works by Dr. Paul Wolff & Alfred Tritschler.
Dr. Paul Wolff (1887–1951) and Alfred Tritschler (1905–1970) are considered pioneers of the Leica. Their archive – comprising an estimated 700,000 images – documents their role as trailblazers in the fields of illustrative and reportage photography. Prior to World War II, Wolff and Tritschler managed an esteemed photo agency in Frankfurt am Main, which also became known internationally.

Under the title, ‘From Frankfurt to Nuremberg by Motorcar’, Leica Gallery Nuremberg presents a selection of the duo’s work that brings to mind a classic road movie: the viewer is treated to brief but representative glimpses of an imaginary journey through Germany. At the time, the motorcar was a most innovative mode of transport – marking the beginning of individual travel.
