Being Human

March 26, 2026

From March 29 to September 6, 2026, the Kunsthalle Rostock presents the exhibition Human Conditions – comprising some 200 photographs along with video works and spatial installations by the German Leica photographer.
The showcase offers comprehensive insights into the artistic processes of a more than three-decades-long career, which has been shaped by one primary theme: the creative exploration of the human experience. Heine’s oeuvre ranges from his widely-known portraits of musicians, actors, artists and athletes to nature studies and architectural photographs – conceptualised in the form of deeply contemplative series. An intuitively understated, reduced visual language, combined with thoughtful narrative compositions, distinguish his approach. The protagonists of Heine’s sensitively staged portraits often appear both distant and, at the same time, relatably human – inviting broader reflections on the complex synergies that can arise between individuals and their environments.

“As humans, the highest fulfilment of our existence seems to lie in shared interactions, in communication, in creativity, and in the pursuit of knowledge,” the photographer explains. “This has informed my work over the past thirty years. I wanted to learn about the human experience, and distill where and how creative people, in particular, find their fulfilment.”
