The Fotomuseum Winterthur is presenting "Autograph", an exhibition of single pieces and series by the interdisciplinary artistic photographer, James Welling
Born in Connecticut, USA, in 1951, James Welling, moves within the hybrid border region between painting, sculpture and traditional photography. Fascinated with the possibilities of the medium, he has followed the fundamental transformation of photography up to its current state. He has pursued the subjects of representation and abstraction for over forty years, and he is considered a central figure of contemporary photography by critics, artists and collectors alike. He works in analogue and digital, colour and black and white, with and without a camera.

Alongside quasi documentary-style series in the tradition of classic artistic photography à la Paul Strand, the Autograph exhibition also presents abstract photograms reminiscent of the avant-garde work of Moholy-Nagy, Christian Schad and Man Ray. Welling's constant exploration of the conceptual and aesthetic principles that form and define the medium, have made him an important role model for a whole generation of contemporary photographic artists.

Vernissage: Friday, November 29, 2013, 6pm.
