Manuel Álvarez Bravo ranks among the most important figures of Latin American photography in the 20th century, and is considered a pioneer of fine-art photography in his home country of Mexico.
Initially self-taught, Álvarez Bravo was influenced by the works of European artists such as Edward Weston and Tina Modotti – both of whom he eventually went on to meet. It was through them that he was introduced to Mexico’s avant-garde scene, including Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. The exhibition ‘Photopoetry’ comprises selected works from the book of the same title.
