It was not until 2009 that Leica launched a digital compact camera created entirely by their own company: the Leica X1. Based on the traditional design of classic Leica cameras, the X1's exterior immediately set it apart from Leica's previous compacts, which were the result of collaborations with Fuji and Panasonic.
The X1 features a fixed lens with autofocus – the Elmarit 24 mm f/2.8 Asph, with an equivalent focal length of 35 mm. The camera's (at the time comparatively large) APS-C CMOS sensor offers 12.9 megapixels for a high resolution. With its low noise levels and excellent image quality, the results of the X1 could hold a torch to many DSLRs by other brands. The success of the X1 paved the way for Leica to create their own compact camera range.
