Based on the construction of the Leica IIId, the new Leica 72 was a half-frame (18 x 24 millimetre) format camera – meaning that 72 exposures could be taken with one 36-exposure roll of film.
The Leica 72 was predominantly manufactured in the company's Canadian facilities in Midland/Ontario, established in 1952 by Max Berek's successor Walter Mandler, who was the creator of more than 45 Leica lenses.
