This picture of curious passers-by arose while the German photographer, Jens Umbach, was in Afghanistan in 2014, realising his The Afghans photo project.
“I photographed The Afghans project in the autumn of 2014. The focus of this series is on showing the Afghan population in Mazar-e-Sharif, northern Afghanistan, where the German army is stationed, and how the German presence has impacted the lives of people there over the past ten years. While I was portraying a baker from the opposite side of the street, my Afghan producer, Jawed, had to repeatedly explain to people what we were doing. Within a short period of time, increasing numbers of people who were, in fact, out getting supplies or doing their day’s work, stopped to watch. Seeing a group of foreigners working on a photo shoot made them so curious that they wanted to find out more.”

From September 5 to November 10, 2017, the Leica Gallery in Wetzlar will be presenting Jens Umbach's Afghanistan series within the framework of a group exhibition.
