A conversation between friends, an elderly couple sitting down to dinner, a young woman enjoying the sun: between 1991 and 2009, Bertien van Manen travelled through Asia and Eastern Europe with just a small analogue camera – spending time with the locals, learning their language and immersing herself in their lives.
Let’s sit down before we go is an intimate portrait of the places she visited and the people she met, stayed with and befriended on her journeys through Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Siberia, Tatarstan and Uzbekistan. The title references an old Russian tradition: to pause for a moment and think about where your journey should take you, and why.
Born 1942 in Den Haag, Netherlands, Bertien van Manen studied French and German before starting her career as a fashion photographer. Today, she is internationally renowned as one of the great innovators within modern documentary photography.
