Inge Morath: Portraits

March 15, 2021

A showcase of works by Inge Morath continues at the FineArtGalerie in Traismauer, Austria, until April 4, 2021.
The FineArtGalerie in Traismauer (Austria) currently presents selected works by Magnum photographer Inge Morath, continuing until April 4, 2021. The showcase also features photographs by Kurt Kaindl, which give insight into Morath’s private and professional surroundings.

The iconic images of Inge Morath (1923-2002) are a testament to the personal relationships she built with those she portrayed. Morath approached her subjects without any preconceptions, and simply waited for the moment when they would reveal themselves to her.

The artist was born in Graz, Austria, under the name of Ingeborg Hermine Mörath. In 1949 she moved to Paris with photographer Ernst Haas, to work for the newly founded Magnum agency as an editor and researcher. However, it was not long before Morath embarked on her own illustrious career as a photographer. In 1962, she married the American playwright Arthur Miller, eventually settling in Connecticut, USA.

Morath’s work has been exhibited in leading museums around the world, and published in numerous photo books. In 1991, she was honoured with the first Austrian State Prize for Photography. The works presented at the FineArtGalerie are taken from the artist’s New York series, spanning an incredible 45-year period.

Access to the exhibition will be subject to the latest Covid-19 regulations. At the time of writing, a maximum of 10 visitors are allowed in the gallery space at any one time.
