Variations and Associations

July 2, 2026

The exhibition Hans Borg – Funiculì Funiculà continues at the Box Gallery in Brussels until July 11, 2026.
Three journeys to southern Italy: three summer holidays, marked by circumstances that could have ended in tragedy. The year is 2019.  Hans Borg and his partner, L., are a young couple in love. They are on holiday. He takes pictures, for no particular purpose. In 2022, before their second Italian summer, L. falls seriously ill. The treatment is gruelling. The outcome uncertain. Suffering. In 2023, L. has finally been cured. A dark chapter can be brought to a close. Deliverance.

When a volcano spews fire and ash, it destroys everything in its path. And yet, it goes on to enrich the very soil it has laid to waste. Life regains its strength, replacing the shadow of death. Rebirth.
It was only in retrospect that Hans Borg realised what to do with the photographs he accumulated in these three summers. Over time, a metaphorical constellation began to suggest itself, eventually taking shape in the darkroom. Funiculì Funiculà is not a documentary narrative – it is a sequence of allusions, recurrences, variations, and associations.
