May 22, 2025

From May 11 to June 9, 2025, the Kunstraum Heilig Geist in Essen, Germany, presents the exhibition Böhm in Böhm with works by internationally renowned architectural photographer Hans Georg Esch.
For over twenty years, Hans Georg Esch has repeatedly trained his lens on buildings designed by three generations of architects –  Dominikus Böhm (1880–1955), his son Gottfried Böhm (1920–2021), as well as his grandsons Paul (*1959), Peter (*1954), and Stephan Böhm (*1950). The Böhm family has been classed as the definitive dynasty of German architects since the end of World War II, renowned particularly for their church designs, as well as residential quarters, administrative and event buildings.

The exhibition, which was curated by Raimund Stecker, features a selection of around 50 photographs dedicated to their work.
The Kunstraum Heilig Geist is located in the former Heilig Geist Church, whose construction started in 1956. The initial draft for the building was still created by Dominikus Böhm – however, Gottfried Böhm completed the project following his father’s death, and the church was consecrated in 1957.  In 2019, the building (known as the “Böhm Church”) was placed under heritage protection. The last church service took place in 2020. In 2024, the space was transformed into a cultural centre and exhibition venue. On April 6, 2025, the Kunstraum Heilig Geist officially opened its doors – serving as an exciting new venue in close proximity to the city’s Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site.
