Helmut Newton

When Helmut Newton created his foundation in Berlin in 2003, he made a permanent loan of various hundreds of original photographs to it. Celebrating its ten year jubilee, the Helmut Newton Foundation is presenting around 200 of them for the first time, in an exhibition titled Permanent Loan Selection. The three main genres – portraits, nudes and fashion – will be displayed in separate spaces, and presented with many images never before exhibited in Berlin.

The selection includes many portraits of well-known personalities, such as Catherine Deneuve, Paloma Picasso, Karl Lagerfeld and David Bowie. In the case of the fashion photography – in both black and white and in colour –, the pictures mainly cover editorial series for internationally renowned magazines, taken in the seventies and eighties. Newton's life-size Big Nudes were taken in Paris in 1980; five of them have hung in the museum's lobby since the creation of the foundation. In the current exhibition further life-size nudes will also be on display.

In June’s Room, visitors will discover a selection of enlarged contact sheets, with different constellations of figures on them, offering an unusual glimpse into Newton's way of working.
