Images by legendary photographers such as Robert Capa, Weegee, Francesco Scavullo and Gerda Taro, are presented alongside less widely known and vernacular works – as well as recent acquisitions by (a.o.) Jess T. Dugan, Nona Faustine, Deana Lawson and Guanyu Xu. The result is a fascinating, in-depth survey of photography history, spanning from the 19th century to the present day.
The ICP was founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa in honour of his brother, Robert Capa (1913–1954) – one of the era’s most pre-eminent photojournalists and war photographers. Robert’s archive, along with images by other leading documentarists of the time, formed the early cornerstone of the ICP’s collection, which now encompasses some 200,000 prints and related materials.
From the Collection, 1845–2019 is on view at the ICP until 6 May 2024.
