From Dizzying Heights

The exhibition 600 Feet Above the Sea continues at the Kunst der Westküste Museum on the island of Föhr until January 12, 2025.
The award-winning photographer Peter Hamel explores Germany’s West Coast from the vantage point of a Cessna: from Borkum to Sylt, he documents a fascinating landscape sculpted by wind, water, and the waves of the sea. His birds-eye view pushes the boundaries of perception and opens up new perspectives of the natural wonder that is the Wadden Sea.

Tidal creeks, fanning out like the talons of a bird of prey; rivulets of intensely coloured water, threading their way across the mudflats. Nature is ever-changing – and the results are breathtaking. From thrilling heights, Hamel discovers sensational scenes – rapidly switching lenses in a rush of excitement, often amidst daringly steep turns. The gentle, colourful transitions within this intertidal environment, the sandbanks rising and falling in a myriad of different shapes, heighten our understanding of the fragility of this unique ecosystem.
