Since the 1970s, Benjamin Katz (*1939) has accompanied fellow artists such as Georg Baselitz or Gerhard Richter with his camera – documenting everything from exhibition openings and art interventions to personal encounters. His work as a chronicler of the contemporary art world and, in particular, his portraits of protagonists such as Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol or Cindy Sherman, have earnt him international acclaim. In fact, the photographer’s archive may well contain the largest portrait collection of its kind.
This is the aspect of Benjamin Katz’s work that is most widely recognised – yet he also trained his lens on other subjects: humorous details, pared-down architectural shots, and – more recently - flower still lifes. Encounters and Coincidences attempts to bring all of these facets together in one fascinating exhibition.
