Conquering the world
Driven by an unbridled sense of adventure and the urge to explore every last corner of the earth with his camera, Schulthess broke all visual convention. Born in Zurich, he initially worked as an apprentice graphic designer, gaining his first insights into photography by sitting in on the lectures of Hans Finsler.
From 1936, Schulthess worked for the Zurich printing and publishing company Conzett & Huber, followed by several years as Art Director for the distinguished Swiss magazine 'Du'.
During the fifties, he began to travel to Africa and the US, followed by trips to Asia, South America, and his participation in an expedition to Antarctica. The Swiss Foundation of Photography now marks the photographer's 100th Birthday with his first retrospective.
