Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2018

The finalists’ exhibition of this year’s Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize will be on display at the MMK in Frankfurt from 22 June to 9 September 2018 – presenting the work of Mathieu Asselin, Rafal Milach, Batia Suter and Luke Willis Thompson.

On 17 May 2018, Luke Willis Thompson received the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2018 during a grand ceremony at the Photographers' Gallery in London. Mathieu Asselin, Rafal Milach and Batia Suter had also been shortlisted for the 21st edition of the prestigious photography award. As of 22 June 2018, the finalists’ works will be on display at the Museum for Modern Art (MMK) in Frankfurt-am-Main as part of the city’s RAY photo triennial. Organised by the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation in collaboration with the Photographers’ Gallery, the exhibition will be presented at the MMK until 9 September 2018.

Applying very diverse artistic approaches and visual formats, this year’s entries addressed the construction and manipulation of ideological, political and economic systems in today’s world. Mathieu Asselin compiled a meticulous investigation of the global biotechnology corporation Monsanto in the form of numerous documents and photographs, while Rafal Milach visited post-Soviet countries to shine a light on the often insidious methods used by governments for the purpose of propaganda and control. Batia Suter’s encyclopaedic compendium of visual associations reveals how our perception of printed images can be altered depending on their context of representation. Luke Willis Thompson’s winning project consists of a video portrait designed to pose questions about media representation and the impact of racism on both society and individual lives.
