The exhibition Dessau 1945: Modernism destroyed shows the Bauhaus city after the takeover by National Socialism until the final hour.
The French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson can be considered one of the most famous eye-witnesses. Imprisoned himself in Germany, he documented the return of French forced labourers and prisoners of war.
32 of these pieces will be on display at the Bauhaus building. They will be exhibited together with historic documentation, with mapping as well as eye-witness reports, and documents from the city archives and the Saxony-Anhalt state archives. Between 2000 and 2007, for the purpose of compensating former forced labourers, witnesses presented these documents as proof of their exploitation.
These approximately 40 witness reports and until now unpublished video interviews with witnesses of that time, are kept in the Dessau city archives. Extracts will be made public within the framework of the exhibition.
