From 23 March to 11 June 2017, the Regionalmuseum Bad Lobenstein (Thuringia, Germany) presents the exhibition ‘Klassik in Schwarz-Weiß’ (Classic in Black-and-White) by Leica photographer Jan Hartmann.
The exhibition comprises the previously unpublished series of the same title, created in the Polish city of Krakow with the Leica Monochrom. The country’s former capital embodies both the origins of Polish culture, and contemporary aspirations for a Western lifestyle.
For this project, Hartmann allowed the city on the Vistula River to set the stage for his love of geometry, order and clarity, and his quest for the decisive moment. The black-and-white images reflect his personal interpretation of the principles of classic visual art. “The Leica Monochrom was a vital element in the completion of this project – not only by reducing the photographic process to the essentials, but also by allowing me to capture the moment in its most natural form due to the camera’s unobtrusive appearance,” the photographer explains.
