Max Pinckers, recipient of this year’s Leica Oskar Barnack Award, will introduce his monograph Red Ink on 7 November 2018. Amongst other works, the self-published photo book comprises excerpts from his award-winning series of the same title, created in North Korea’s capital city of Pyongyang.
In August 2017, at the height of the propaganda battles between the U.S. and North Korea, Max Pinckers accompanied the American journalist Evan Osnos on a four-day trip to Pyongyang, commissioned by the weekly magazine The New Yorker. As expected, their entire visit was strictly monitored, with every location diligently prepared before their arrival. Aware that it would be impossible to catch a glimpse of the reality behind the regime’s facade, the Belgian photographer decided to document his surroundings in a boldly lit, flash-heavy style usually used in propaganda and advertising images – thereby consciously emphasising the artifice and orchestrated nature of each scene. The book Red Ink features a selection of these illuminating images, with an accompanying text by Evan Osnos.
