Benno Wundshammer
Within the framework of the European Month of Photography in Berlin, the German-Russian Museum Berlin-Karlshorst is presenting an exhibition titled Benno Wundshammer: Propaganda Photographer during the Second World, from November 13, 2014, to February 15, 2015.
Benno Wundshammer (1913-1987) first worked as a local reporter in Cologne and, as of 1938, increasingly for the Reichssportblatt (the Reich's sports paper) in Berlin. His involvement as word and picture reporter for various air force propaganda companies took him to virtually all the European fronts and to North Africa.
As of 1942, Wundshammer worked for Signal, the complexly designed foreign paper of the Higher Command of the Armed Forces. This made him one of the elite among war reporters. The most formative of all his assignments took Wundhammer to Stalingrad in October 1942.
Even decades later, the subject of Stalingrad would still to occupy him. After the war, Wundhammer continued with his career. Together with other former Signal co-workers, he had significant impact on the press landscape of the new German Federal Republic.
