Anna Jermolaewa receives the 2021 Otto Breicha Prize for Artistic Photography.
In 1983, Salzburg’s Museum der Moderne launched a biennial award for fine-art photography. Since 2007, this prize has been funded by the Breicha Family. The ‘Otto-Breicha-Preis für Fotokunst – Museum der Moderne Salzburg’ is awarded every two years to a photography artist based in Austria.

The 18th edition of the Otto Breicha Prize goes to Anna Jermolaewa, following an unanimous vote. “Anna Jermolaewa, who moved to Austria from Saint Petersburg in 1989, is a conceptual artist working primarily with the media of photography and video,” the jury states. “She is a self-described realist whose explorations of reality are critical and darkly humorous. The photo series ‘Hostile Architecture’, which she began in 2019, shows metal spikes and similar fixtures designed to prevent homeless people from dwelling in public spaces. Jermolaewa also documents the painful marks this dehumanising architecture leaves on her own body.”
