From 21 June 2015, the Kunstmuseum now offers a renewed opportunity to view the selected works, providing an extensive overview of the artist's photographic oeuvre. Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956) continuously sought out new paths in the fields of painting, sculpture and collage, and ranks among the great innovators of photography in the first half of the 21st century.
We Must Tear the Veil from our Eyes
The Kunstmuseum simultaneously presents the exhibition "We Must Tear the Veil from our Eyes", consisting of photographs and drawings from the Russian avant-garde era. Around 100 exhibits (taken from the collection of the Sepherot Foundation, Liechtenstein) illustrate how the hallmarks of fine-art movements such as Constructivism or Suprematism were also integrated into the medium of photography.
Rodchenko, in particular, pursued photo-montages from a very early stage, building on his previous experience as a painter. With his Leica, he set out to capture urban life. However, his aim was not simply to record reality – instead, his unconventional choice of subjects and unusual perspectives reflect the compositions of abstract paintings.
