Between Light and Dark

The Italian photographer’s exhibition Between Light and Dark is on view at the Bregenz Festival until August 17, 2025 – featuring works commissioned by Leica Camera Austria.
Last year’s Bregenz Festival made waves with its magnificent production of Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz (The Marksman), re-imagined by director and stage designer Philipp Stölzl. The star of the show (aside from, of course, the high-calibre cast) was Stölzl’s gothic fairytale landscape – built on the festival’s iconic “floating stage” on Lake Constance, and enhanced with a specially made lagoon. Amidst warm summer nights, the audience was transported into a winter wonderland of elaborate hilltops, crooked houses and gnarled trees, covered by seemingly frozen blankets of snow. The grand-scale production with its spectacular, richly detailed visuals was celebrated by the press and audiences alike. What a set, what a backdrop!

Italian photographer and visual artist Alessia Rollo (b. 1982) was commissioned by Leica Camera Austria to accompany the opera’s performance in the summer of 2024. For Rollo, the stage serves as a metaphor for real life. Through a skilled interplay between intimacy and visual alienation, the artist created nuance-rich photographs that perfectly capture the production’s emotional bandwidth and theatrical modes of representation.
The showcase is on view at the Bregenz Festival until August 17, 2025 – in parallel to the opera itself, which has been brought back for this year’s festival edition.

Alessia Rollo’s projects have been featured in numerous international solo and group exhibitions. She was previously introduced in LFI 5.2022 with her portfolio, An endless Day.
