Advent in Vienna

December 4, 2013

Early photographs from the National Geographic archives will be showing at the WestLicht photo museum from 6 December 2013
From 6 December 2013, Vienna's WestLicht photo museum will be showing early photographs from the National Geographic's legendary image archive. Soon after it was founded in Washington in 1888, the magazine began to publish regular photo series, laying the foundation for its immense global popularity.

Starting out with an American audience, the magazine's aim has always been to bring the wider world to the living rooms of its readers – capturing foreign cultures, mesmerising nature and wild animals in photographic series, and making them accessible in the form of a magazine.

Early days
The exhibition comprises a selection of highlights from the magazine's earliest beginnings through to the nineteen-fifties. WestLicht is the first museum in Europe to show the exhibition.
