Digital images on film
Many photographers are still faced with the problem of how to permanently archive their image data. In the era of analogue photography, it was the negative that, when properly handled, could store the data for decades. When it comes to digital images, however, the question of long-term archiving is still open.
From a historical perspective, digital photography is still in its infancy. While the developments and improvements of the last decade have been monumental, there have also been constant changes in format, storage media, data readers, and so on. Even with the most secure and modern mass storage media, there is no guarantee that equipment that can read the data will still be around in 20 to 30 years time.
Adequate archiving is and remains digital photography's Achilles' heel. One possible alternative, or bridging solution, for storing digital images is to secure them on analogue film.
There are a few companies with film recording equipment that can deal with this type of archiving. For example, with a Polaroid ProPalette 8000 Digital Film Recorder it is possible to produce slides or negatives with a maximum resolution of up to 8000 lines (8192 x 5464 Pixel). The Durst LVT Rhino+ Film Recorder achieves even better results and larger negative formats. It is not a cheap solution, but for your most valuable images it is definitely worth considering.
