Güler’s profound love for Turkey – and, in particular, for Istanbul – manifested itself in the form of emotive black and white images spanning several decades. The exhibition in Amsterdam is a perfect opportunity to explore iconic as well as unknown parts of Güler’s oeuvre: through four sections (The Iconic, The Historic, The Ambassador, and The Personal), visitors are able to immerse themselves in Güler’s photographic practice – from his work as a prominent photojournalist, all the way to his remarkable experimental imagery.
Celebrated as ‘The Eye of Istanbul’, Ara Güler (1928–2018) was a driving force in Turkish photography. Despite his exceptional portraits of world figures such as Winston Churchill, Bertrand Russell, Alfred Hitchcock and Pablo Picasso, he is still most widely recognised for his poignant images of the streets, docks and inhabitants of Istanbul.
In 2016, Ara Güler was honoured with the Leica Hall of Fame Award.
