Maximizing the picture format
Since the invention of photography, the medium challenges many artists to present their work in the largest format possible. Whether daguerrotypes, photogrammes, small format pictures, polaroids, silver gelatine prints or archival pigment prints, the technical developments of photography have always decided how large the format of a print can be.
The "Breaking the Boundaries" exhibition takes on this matter, presenting selected, large-format works by renowned artists, who enlarge the picture format as far as it can go by using different printing processes. Their intention is not to simply maximize for the fun of it: these artists see the over-sized format – which can be as much as 300 centimetres in length – as necessary for expressing their creative ideas.
