Arno Fischer (1927–2011) is considered one of the most influential German photographers of the twentieth century. Comprising more than 100 black-and-white and colour images, this comprehensive showcase offers insight into Fischer’s photographic oeuvre, as well as the different roles he took on throughout his career: photographer, facilitator, and educator. The exhibition thereby emphasises the important place Fischer holds within German photography history.
Over the course of his life, the artist embraced a wide variety of genres – ranging from everyday scenes in Eastern Bloc countries, Equatorial Guinea, India and the USA, all the way to outdoor fashion shoots in East European cities. By applying his street-photography-inspired style to his fashion photographs, he not only helped revolutionise East Germany’s legendary ‘Sibylle’ magazine, but also significantly shaped the image of women in the GDR during the 1960s.
The exhibition ‘A Journey’ with his works continues at Berlin’s Haus am Kleistpark until August 13, 2023.
