Uncensored

June 24, 2026

With Annegret Soltau. Uncensored, the Francisco Carolinum in Linz, Austria, dedicates a comprehensive retrospective to a key figure in the field of feminist avant-garde and body art. The showcase is on view until June 28, 2026.
Since the 1970s, the German visual artist (b. 1946) has engaged in radical explorations of body politics, female identity, motherhood and transience. The exhibition traces her oeuvre from early graphic works and performances to her expressive ‘photo stitchings’ – comprising torn-up photo fragments, sown together with black thread – with which Soltau breaks both social and aesthetic taboos. Personal experiences become a mirror for societal power structures – making the private political.
Curated by Michaela Seiser based on a concept by Svenja Grosser, the retrospective highlights the enduring relevance of Soltau’s work to current debates on the body, gender and self-determination.
