The winning image, created by Danish photographer Mads Nissen (born 1979), was described by the jury as a deeply compelling representation of a universal theme. In Russia, homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders are faced with increasing discrimination. Mads Nissen captured gay couple Jon and Alex during an intimate moment in Saint Petersburg – the photograph is part of his long-term project Homophobia in Russia. The photographer stands to receive 10,000 euros.
In the category of Sports Stories, Leica photographer Kieran Doherty was awarded first place for his series on tennis audiences at Wimbledon, in which he skillfully captures the throng of enthusiastic crowds as well as the behind-the-scenes atmosphere. Italian photographer Paolo Marchetti (previously among the finalists for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2013) achieved third place in the category Nature Stories for his feature on brutal crocodile farming in Columbia. In addition, Italian photographer Gianfranco Tripodo (third place in the category General News / Singles), German photographer Christian Ziegler (second place Nature Stories), US photographer Darcy Padilla (first place, Long-Term Projects), and Tomas van Houtryve (third place in the category Contemporary Issues / Stories) also created parts of their work with Leica cameras.
The jury made their selection from a pool of around 98,000 images, submitted by photographers from 131 countries. 42 entries were awarded in eight categories. An exhibition of the winning works opens in Amsterdam on 24 April, and will subsequently be shown in more than 40 countries.
