The exhibition #womenphotographer Vol. I will be on display at Berlin’s f3 – freiraum für fotografie gallery from 6 December 2018 to 10 February 2019.
In the 19th century, women set out to claim the new medium of photography. Pioneers in a multitude of ways, they not only made fundamental contributions to the medium’s development, but also gave rise to new visual approaches. The cyanotypes created by the English botanist Anna Atkins (1799-1871), for example, count among the first photographs to have been published as scientific illustrations.
The purpose of this showcase is not to offer a representative overview of female photography, but rather to provide insight into various approaches, in order to encourage viewers to embark on a deeper exploration of the female perspective in photography throughout the ages. #womenphotographer Vol. I comprises works by Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Elinor Carucci, Nan Goldin, Germaine Krull, Dorothea Lange, Vivian Maier, Inge Morath, Ruth Orkin, Dayanita Singh, and many more. An accompanying catalogue, published by artbeau4.com, is available at the gallery.
