The standard zoom for the Leica S
When Leica introduced the new Leica S during Photokina 2012, the company simultaneously presented a standard zoom for digital mirror reflex cameras: the Leica Vario-Elmar S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 Asph.

The Vario-Elmar S 30-90 mm offers equivalent imaging characteristics to a 24-72 mm lens in small format. It was constructed of 14 elements in four groups, nine of which were made of glasses with anomalous partial dispersion. The design includes three low-dispersion fluoride elements (for the correction of chromatic aberrations), two aspherical surfaces on the rear elements (to minimise mono-chromatic aberrations) and an additional aspherical surface on the front lens of the second group, which maintains consistent imaging performance at shorter distances, and helps minimise distortion.

The Vario-Elmar S 30-90 mm combines compact size and low weight (1,275 g) with a universally versatile range of focal lengths, extremely high image performance and user-friendly operation – making it an attractive and valuable working tool.
