Born in Italy, Modotti’s journey led her into the epicentre of twentieth-century art and politics – from her beginnings as an actress in silent films in Hollywood, all the way to her immersion in Mexico’s dynamic art scene, where she moved in the social circles of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Modotti photographed the country and its people with a special focus on women, folklore and religious art. Her unvarnished visual style made her one of the central figures in the world of modernist photography.
However, Modotti’s story extends beyond the context of her art. Her dedication to revolutionary ideals also placed her at the forefront of social change. In 1931 – after moving to Moscow and joining the Communist Party of the Soviet Union – she turned her back on photography in order to devote herself entirely to politics. Modotti passed away in 1942 at the age of 45. Decades after her death, her talent is often overshadowed by the absence of biographical information, and the mysteries surrounding her life.
Foam Amsterdam now presents an exhibition of almost 250 vintage prints, which are on loan from nine leading international institutions and a number of private collections. The presentation also includes magazines and original photos captured by those closest to the artist.
Artist and Activist is on view until 31 January 2024.
